flower Fairy baby quilt done

I have been collecting flower fairy inspired fabric for a while, so when the chance came to make a little girl quilt, I had just the fabric. First finish of the year, even before the Quilter's Album, which I thought would be the first. Must get back to that!

Another baby quilt (top)

A baby quilt with pink and brown? I think this fits the bill. Still to be quilted. This was designed around the fairy square in the middle, using EQ7.

Delivery totes

I like to make totes to deliver my baby quilts. Benefits are using up leftover fabric, not buying wrapping paper or more likely, a paper wrapping bag, and the parents have something useful rather than trash. I finally got the totes made for the last two baby quilts I made. One quilt is delivered (owl quilt), parents were thrilled.

The other quilt has not been delivered. Baby was born early and I am letting Mom recuperate a bit before visiting. Both totes have outside pockets (which holds card and washing instructions upon delivery). The sock monkey tote also has two inside pockets and a hanging tab. Both totes where photographed with quilt inside, so you can see they are roomy :)

Snowball baby quilts

I needed to make a baby quilt (or two), and happened upon this pattern in McCall's Quick Quilts (Feb/Mar 2012 issue). This was the first one, made to be non-gender specific. This one was quilted in a giant stipple.

Then I went to a quilt show and found this adorable sock monkey fabric, and knew I had to make another one!

It was March, and the latest 2012 Quilting challenge was up, challenging me to do something other than a giant stipple. This was my first sample for a modified stipple, more interesting.

So I decided to combine feathers in the and the modified stipple. Not sure about it for a baby quilt, too dense, more like a play mat.

But they are done and ready to give once I wash them.

Snowball Baby Quilt

First of three baby quilts I promised to make. This one came from the Feb/Mar 2012 issue of McCall's Quick Quilts. I modified it a little bit so it is only as wide (slightly narrower) than the standard width of quilting cotton (it is 41" x 50.5" long, before quilting and binding).

I think this is the last baby quilt for a while, at least I don't know of any that need to be made! This is just the top, need to figure out how to quilt it next.

Baby quilt done

Another baby quilt from Lickety-Split Quilts for Little Ones by Laurie Bevan, this one started square, but got turned rectangular by adding another row on the top and the bottom. I played around in EQ before deciding on this variation. Fabrics are Kaffe Fassett's Roman Glass (two colorways) and Splash (Blank textiles).
Believe it or not, I mostly used Marti Michell templates for this quilt, except for the large center square and the large quarter square triangles, those I printed from EQ and used a MM template to trim the points so all the pieces went together nicely (without rabbit ears).

Flannel baby quilt done

It's been a quilty kind of day. Got the binding done on the flannel baby quilt. If you look at the upper right corner you can see my name and date. Now, blocks (fun) or the other baby quilt to be quilted (also fun). Should get the other baby quilt done, so I guess that will be next.

Empty Spools, among other things

I've been down at Empty Spools, a quilt retreat with classes held at the Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, CA. Fabulous fun. I took a class from Suzanne Marshall, an appliquer with a quirky sense of humor. I can't show you her latest quilt, but it is called, at least right now, The Musicians, and what musicians they are! Taken from an old print, she enlarges them and makes them her own, with her signature bugs. We worked on what she calls Wacky Birds. Mine is almost ready to quilt, having found a perfect border fabric in my stash. It is hand appiqued, hand embroidered, and will be hand quilted. We learned her take away applique method in class. Works well, but I need more practice.

Before I left I had been working on the Prairie Paisley baby quilt, made with some blocks I decided not to use with the Patchwork Party blocks. The four extra blocks are in the center, surrounded by a pieced border, and then a triple border. I used Marti Michell templates (sets B & D) to make the blocks, which work lovely with the Peaky and Spike and Ice Cream Cone shapes. I pieced the border before attaching, reversing the pressing so the seams would nest when I mitred the corners. Works pretty well . Now to find backing and batting, this will be machine quilted.

The Cotton Patch from Lafayette brings down a mini-quilt shop so that people can get things easily that they need for class, or another new project. They had some flannel baby kits, I got one. I decided to make nine patches, 4 sets are done, 4 more to go. There are 8 fabrics in the quilt, then I need to get backing and binding. This is the first flannel quilt I have made.

Oh, and I finished a sock! Just one, working on the second one, made from Opal's Harry Potter yarn, Ron coloring.
